The content standards express what all students can and need to learn in mathematics to prepare them for the study of advanced mathematics, for science and technical careers and for post-secondary study in all content areas.

Number Sense Whole Numbers
Read and write whole numbers to billions.
Estimate and round very large (millions) and very small (thousandths) numbers.
Identify, orally and in writing, the place value for each digit in a whole number expressed through billions.
Compare two whole numbers (to billions) using symbols (>, <, or =) and words ("greater than", "less than", or "equal to").

Fractions
Compare fractions with like and unlike denominators of 12 or less, using the signs >, <, and =.
Determine the least common denominator (LCD) of fractions with unlike denominators.

Decimals
Read, write, and identify the place values of decimals through ten-thousandths.
Compare the value of two negative or positive decimals through ten-thousandths using the symbols >, <, and =.
Write decimals in expanded form.
Round decimals to the nearest tenth, hundredth, and thousandth.

Percents and Ratios
Recognize the percent sign and understand percent as parts of a hundred.
Find the given percent of a number.
Determine and express simple ratios.
Use ratio to create a simple scale drawing.

Relating Fractions, Decimals and Percents
  Write fractions as decimals.
Express equivalence between fractions, decimals, and percent.
Identify and represent on a number line decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, and positive and negative integers.

Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
Multiply two factors of up to four digits each.
Know what it means for one number to be divisible by another.
Divide dividends up to four digits by one-digit, two-digit, and three-digit divisors.
Move the decimal point when dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000.
Identify prime numbers less than 50.
Determine the greatest common factor and the least common multiple of given numbers.
Estimate decimal sums, differences, and products by rounding.
Add and subtract decimals through ten-thousandths.
Estimate and find the product of two numbers expressed as decimals through thousandths.
Add and subtract with fractions and mixed numbers (with like and unlike denominators), with and without regrouping, and express answers in simplest form.
Multiply fractions and mixed numbers.

Algebra and Functions
Know the names and definitions of commutative and associative properties for addition, and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties for multiplication.
Recognize variables and solve one-operation equations using variables.
Write and solve equations for word problems using variables.
Identify the ordered pair for a point and locate the point for an ordered pair in the first quadrant of a coordinate plane.

Measurement and Geometry
Estimate and make linear measurements in yards, feet and inches (to 1/16 in.), and in meters, centimeters, and millimeters.
Convert to common units of measurement in problems involving addition and subtraction of different units.
Choose an appropriate measuring device and unit of measure to solve problems involving measurement of length, weight, and volume.
Determine an amount of elapsed time in hours and minutes to 24 hours, including crossing noon or midnight.
Determine the perimeter of a polygon, given the appropriate measures.
Identify the diameter, radius, chord, and circumference of a circle.
Identify whether the application of the concept of perimeter or area is appropriate for a given problem.
Measure angles in degrees.
Know that the sum of the angles of any triangle is 180.
Know that the sum of the angles of any quadrilateral is 360.
Identify and construct different kinds of triangles - equilateral, right, and isosceles.
Define what it means for triangles to be congruent.
Know that regular polygons have sides of equal length and angles of equal measure.
Work with circles to identify arc, chord, radius, and diameter.
Using a compass, draw circles with a given diameter or radius.
Find the area of a rectangle, triangle, and parallelogram in a variety of square units (mi, yd, ft, in, km, m, cm, and mm).
Compute volume and surface area of a cube and a rectangular box.

Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability
Know how to write ordered pairs correctly, for example, (x, y).
Know the definition of mean, median, and mode.
Identify mean, median, and mode for sets of data.
Use fractions and percentages to compare sets of different sizes.

Mathematical Reasoning
Determine when and how to break a problem into simpler parts.
Use estimation to verify the reasonableness of calculated results.
Apply strategies and results from simpler problems to more complex problems.
Use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, and models, to explain mathematical reasoning.
Evaluate the reasonableness of the solution in the context of the original situation.
Solve practical problems such as computing sale price, unit price, etc.
