MCHCS Standards Checklist - Mathematics - Third Grade
K | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th
The content standards express what all students can and need to learn in mathematics to prepare them for the study of advanced mathematics, for science and technical careers and for post-secondary study in all content areas.

Arithmetic and Number Sense
Write and solve number sentences using symbols (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Read, write, compare, and order numbers to 1,000.
Understand place value of whole numbers to hundred thousands.
Compare and order decimal tenths (.9, .8, .4, and .1).
Compare and order fractions of an inch on a ruler to the 1/4-inch.
Write numbers using expanded notation (4,321=4,000 + 300 + 20 + 1).
Extend number and geometric patterns.
Read and write mixed numbers.
Use subtraction concepts (take away, to find the difference).
Use addition concepts (to combine or increase).
Use multiplication concepts (to combine sets).
Use division concepts (to separate into sets).
Predict outcomes from samples.

Problem Solving
  Identify missing information.
Identify operation to be used.
Use problems-solving strategies.

Money
Add, subtract, multiply and divide money.
Label money units correctly.

Estimation and Measurement (customary and metric)
Use linear units to estimate and measure.
Read a thermometer (Fahrenheit and Celsius).
Use units to estimate and measure volume.
Use units to estimate and measure weight.

Time
Tell time to the minute (e.g., 3:46).

Geometry
Determine perimeter and area of squares and rectangles.
Find the perimeter of a polygon (e.g., hexagon, octagon, etc.).
Identify shapes; identify patterns and extend them.
Identify and compare one and two-dimensional objects.
Count lines, sides, and vertices (angles) of basic shapes.
Draw lines of symmetry in basic shapes.
Identify congruent figures.

Probability and Statistics
Gather and organize data into a chart and develop inferences.

Mathematical Skills and Tools
  Know multiplication facts through 10's.
Multiply multi-digit numbers by one-digit (3x121=363).
Know division facts through 5's.
Add and subtract 5 digit numbers with regrouping.
Use "shortcut multiplication" to multiply by 10 (add zeros).

Fractions
Understand that fractions are parts of the whole.
Add/subtract fractions with like denominators.
Understand equivalent fractions (2/4=1/2).

Mental Math and Estimation of Whole Numbers
Round off numbers to the nearest ten and hundred.
Round off numbers in problem to estimate answer (addition/subtraction).

Algebra
Convert simple units (inches to feet, minutes to hour, etc.).
Use the commutative property for addition (3+4=7 and 4+3=7) and multiplication (2x3=6 and 3x2=6).
Use the associative property, (9+6) + 4 = 9 + (6+4).
Identify the missing operation (62 50=12).
