| The
language arts content standards describe skills, knowledge,
and abilities all students should be able to master at
specific grade levels. Language skills are essential tools
because they serve as the basis for future learning and
career development. They enrich, foster responsible citizenship,
and secure our collective wisdom as a nation. |

| |
Read a minimum of 10 books at grade level,
including 4-6 from the approved list. |

Word
Analysis, Fluency, and Systematic Vocabulary
Development |

Recognize and use knowledge of spelling patterns
previously taught (e.g., special vowel spellings)
when reading.
Know how to divide simple words into syllables
when reading (e.g., vowel-consonant-vowel
= sup/er and vowel-consonant/ consonant-vowel
=sup/per).
Decode two or more syllable words.
Recognize common abbreviations (e.g., Jan.,
Sun., Mr., St.).
Identify and correctly use regular plurals
(e.g. -s, -es, -ies) and irregular plurals
(e.g., fly/flies, wife/wives).
Read aloud fluently and accurately from grade
level material with appropriate intonation
and expression. |

Understand and explain common antonyms and
synonyms.
Use knowledge of individual words in unknown
compound words to predict their meaning.
